The divine feminine is everything that has ever been. She is you. She is me. She is both the shadow and the light. Powerful within her vulnerability. Passionate, creative and wild. Filled with instinct and wisdom. A healer. A creator. She holds the doorway to the heart.
What an honour it is to share with you all a little insight into this beautiful woman who to me embodies the divine feminine. Wisdom, strength, integrity, creativity, passion, heart, authenticity, compassion, love, inspiration. These are just a few words to describe the beauty that is Eliza Sloane, the amazing woman behind the label Mermaid by Hand Jewelry. A woman of such talent who follows her passions, that is seen and felt through her incredible designs. When I first saw her new lookbook shots I had to share them on my blog. I could feel the love she holds for her craft. When you wear jewellery, clothing or anything for that matter, you can feel the vibrational lift when something is made with love. It enlivens your spirit. I highly recommend to you all to include a little Mermaid by Hand love in your collection.
Here are some beautiful pictures from her latest lookbook, Of Salt, Sand + Silver, featuring the stunning Kestrel, founder of Awear2014. Seriously check this lady out too! So so amazing!
And I’m honoured to share a wonderful interview with the gorgeous Eliza that is sure to bring some sunshine and inspiration to your day.
My greatest passions in life are creating and inspiring others. Since as long as I can remember, I have been a very visual person, but I never imagined it would lead to starting a jewelry line. I always thought I wanted to go into styling (which is why I’m completely obsessed with your blog!) When I’m not at the workbench, I enjoy surfing, traveling, camping, hiking with my boyfriend and dog, and yoga. I strive to live an active, healthy, and organic life…living by the sea in southern California makes this very easy! Traveling and moving around a lot keeps me inspired, and the Native American and Mexican cultures have always been big inspirations. I’ve also recently become very interested in sustainable and ethically made clothing, due to a good friend, Kestrel starting a new project called Awear 2014, who just so happens to be the stunning model in the lookbook. My boyfriend also runs a sustainable, eco-concious tee shirt company. I’m very very grateful to be surrounded by inspiring, kind people who are making a difference in the world.
There are so many things I adore about creating jewelry. One of my favorite quotes is “learn to love the process.” Some days, I just want to finish a piece and see the outcome, while other days I find more joy in the slow process of creating customs. Growing up on the East coast, I’ve always been an avid beachcomber, and I love to mix seaglass and shells with stones to create the perfect combination for jewelry. Every piece of jewelry is made from my home studio, and no two pieces are exactly alike. All the turquoise used is handpicked, which is a very fun process in its own.
Collaborating with other talents for photoshoots and lookbooks is always rewarding, as it is so nice to see your own creations in a different light. Drew McGill, a close friend and photographer, is the genius behind the lens for the summer lookbook. When you run your own business, you never know who you will meet. There is a very talented artisan back on the east coast who cuts and polishes all of the wampum you see in my designs. His love and appreciation for this ancient art are so apparent in his work. Also, connecting with bloggers, customers and likeminded designers from around the world is pretty amazing, and some have even sent over some seaglass to use in my designs.
Currently, things are being done on a “one day at a time” basis. Sometimes you just have to sit back and be OK with what you did or did not accomplish that day. (Yoga has greatly helped me understand and practice this mentality.) I would love to expand Mermaid by Hand and eventually have some more creatives hop on board, but until the right person(s) come along, I’ll be keeping it small. I never want Mermaid by Hand to be mass produced or have a “pop out” feel to it, although it would be nice to be able to offer wholesale options.
The craziest thing I have ever done has to be swimming in a shark cage off the coast of Hawaii last year. I have my friend Abby to thank for that…
One of the many things I love most about this interview is how real and authentic it is. There is great strength in the vulnerability it takes to share yourself so openly with the world. This is one of the most inspiring gifts a person can bring to others lives. It helps us to be comfortable with ourselves, brave enough to share our own light, truth, passion and creativity.
Big thanks to Eliza Sloane for sharing this sneak peak into her life.
I hope this post brings love and light to you all. Perhaps a spark for some to start a new endeavour they have always been dreaming of doing, and inspiration to those on the path of creativity, to never ever give up your dreams and what you love doing most.
